Joaquin Rivas plays for the Sacramento Republic FC. He was born in Santa Ana, El Salvador and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada since the age of 4.

Joaquin began playing soccer at the very young age of 4. Soccer has always been a big part of who he is. Rivas credits his families support for his success.

Joaquin has a very strong work ethic with a strong belief that anyone can become anything if they give it everything they have. In 2009 he was able to receive Nevada Gatorade Player of the year which was a huge achievement he is very proud of.

After having 4 successful high school years Joaquin was offered a full soccer/school scholarship to UNLV, which became one of his proudest moments. Rivas is currently attending the University of Nevada Las Vegas to complete two more classes to graduate with a Sociology and Public Health Bachelors Degree.

After college Joaquin was playing soccer in Washington for Kitsap Pumas in the Premier Development League (PDL). That summer of 2014 he experienced many things that helped him become a better soccer player where they reached the National PDL final. After the PDL season ended he attended a United Soccer League (USL) tryout in which 4 teams were going to be hosting, Sacramento Republic being one. Almost 3 months later Joaquin received a phone call from Sacramento Republic inviting him to attend a 4 day tryout in Sacramento. Accepting the invite was a given as Joaquin knows that opportunities like these don’t come along very often.

That same week Joaquin flew out to Sacramento and tried out against many great players fighting for contracts as well. Joaquin made the cut and was excited to stay and play for such a great organization like the Republic.

Getting signed in February was the beginning of a dream come true. Rivas had signed his first professional contract and couldn’t wait to play in front of the best fans in the USL. Being able to play his first game and scoring his first goal in front of a sold out crowd of 20,000 fans at Hughes Stadium was definitely an experience he will never forget.

"Every time I step onto Bonney Field I thank God and all the fans for making this such a great experience for me." - Joaquin

Joaquin has fallen in love with Republic fans and Sacramento so much that he could definitely see himself living here in the near future. The city is more than ready to bring in an MLS team and Sacramento Republic is ready to share all those moments with every single fan.

Mr. Latino:
Joaquin why do you love soccer so much?

Joaquin:
Having a soccer ball at my feet is what keeps me going every single day of my life. In other words, soccer if my life. Ever since I was younger I didn’t ask for toys or clothes, all that I cared about was me having my soccer cleats on and having that soccer ball by my side. As I got older I knew by the age of 17 I was good enough to keep playing soccer at the higher level. I knew it was going to take a lot of heart, dedication and discipline to become a professional soccer player. Nothing is handed to you, so I knew I had to go out and work hard for what I wanted. This is only the beginning of my soccer career and I wish to keep improving and reaching higher goals. Soccer will always be a huge part of my life and I can’t wait for what is ahead of me in my career.
